How To Create a Hygge Atmosphere.

What is Hygge?

Northern European countries are the creators and masters of Hygge (pronounced Hooga). One way (among many others) to explain this style/way of living is a cozy environment surrounded by the people you feel more comfortable with. Due to climate and Sun hours, Nordic people spend many months in their homes. And now due to the Covid-19 crisis, the rest of the World is learning to do that too.

For Nordic people life happens mostly at home. The gatherings, the cooking, the playing... They have mastered the creation of really cozy places. In the last few years that trend has started spreading around the World too.

Your HOME should be YOUR TEMPLE, it should be the place where you long to arrive after a long trip, after a hard day at work or a challenging time in your life. Home should be where YOU WANT to be, if it is NOT that place yet, you should start working on making the necessary changes so it happens. YOU DESERVE IT.

Items that will make your home more "hygeellig"

  • A comfortable seating area (a couch, a loveseat, a reading chair...you name it)
  • Candles (lots of them, light them up every evening!!)
  • Books
  • Things made out of wood (trays, picture frames, tables...)
  • A high quality soft blanket
  • A teapot (are you a tea drinker?...there is a ritual on every cup of tea. You can never drink tea in a rush...it has to be at the right moment.

One of the most important Hygge factors (and my very favorite): delicious food!

As a confessed foodie who can actually plan any trip around restaurants, local gastronomy and new cuisines, this is my very favorite factor on the Hygge lifestyle. A perfect gathering of delicious food and the people you love to be around the most. Personally, that beats anything in this life! and if the event can take place al Fresco in a nice Spring or Summer night that's extra points for the "Hyggiliest" experience...

SOME BENEFITS OF LIVING THE YOGINI LIFE

I found Yoga or Yoga found me over 15 years ago. The practice provides tools I can use on my yoga mat and also outside the yoga studio, in real life situations. Living according to yoga principles makes me happier, more serene, and content. It is not easy to keep a balance, it requires daily work, and I get off the wagon once in a while too. But when that happens, I know deep inside that I need to go back to the yoga studio or these days, find inspirational teachers for an online session.

What I love most about this discipline is that the physical and the inner practices will never be perfected...you never stop learning and growing. The more you know, the more you realize you have to learn and work on. It is a humbling experience. Personally, I love that kind of motivation in life: knowing there is always room to grow, live new experiences, and improve.

WHAT YOU NEED TO START

Easy: a comfortable yoga outfit (breathable yoga pants and shirt) I practice several sports and I'm a big believer on the right attire and quality of the clothing items, believe me, in a hot yoga class it will make a huge difference! you'll also need a  good yoga mat (again it makes a difference), a towel, and water depending how hot is your studio. I've been practicing hot yoga for many years, and the benefits you get from being in a super hot and humid room are not only physical but mental too. And finally and most important: an open mind. When you walk into a Yoga studio there is no judgment. The only competitor you'll find in the studio is yourself. If you are able to channel this opportunity the right way, you are going to be limitless in any aspect of your life.

Stay tuned for future posts related to yoga, the importance of good breathing, and ways to find balance in your life.

Namaste,

Cristina
